Why we're starting with residential proxies

productstrategy

A marketplace only works if both sides show up. So the first question for any distributed-infrastructure network is: what's the product with the clearest demand that your supply is uniquely good at? For us, that's residential proxies.

Why proxies, and why first

Everyday devices on real home and mobile connections are exactly what the proxy market values — diverse, residential IPs. That makes a network of contributed hardware a natural fit, without needing GPUs or datacenter-grade machines on day one.

  • Demand is real and well-understood. Businesses already buy residential bandwidth for price comparison, ad verification, and market research.
  • The bar to contribute is low. A phone, a Raspberry Pi, or an old laptop on a home connection can participate.
  • It proves the hard part first — secure enrollment, an overlay that carries traffic device-to-device, fair metering, and provider reputation.

Bandwidth is metered fairly, and separately

Egress is its own meter with per-tier caps and overage — never bundled into a flat price. RentYourCompute sells cheap, interruptible capacity, not a CDN, and metering bandwidth honestly is how we keep it that way. Every charge derives from measurement at the gateway, on infrastructure we control — not from numbers a device reports about itself.

The path to general compute

Proxies are the wedge, not the destination. The same primitives — enrollment, overlay networking, metering, and a transparent reputation score — are what a broader compute marketplace needs. We're starting where demand is clearest and growing into general compute from there.
